This Autumn Gallery 435 introduces Slough, to the inspiring and challenging world of abstract art on a global scale. You are invited to come and explore the work of international group Pintura Fresca with their exhibition 'Is abstract art dead?'. The show presents a diverse range of paintings from around the world, featuring artists from Europe, USA and beyond.

Abstract art has always been victim to criticism as a non-figurative art form people can find on the one hand difficult and on the other passe. Is it that the movement hasn't been given the chance it really deserves?

The influential work of Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko in 1950's America, saw a somewhat controversial rise and degree of appreciation for the work of the abstract artist. People began to see more meaning or appeal in Pollock's spontaneous painting style.

While the work of these masters has been appropriated by the gift card industry there is little appreciation for abstract style as a contemporary medium today. With an emphasis on conceptual work in the UK in particular, many appear unable to look past the heavy brushstrokes or unusual shapes and into the bigger picture. Pintura Fresca invite their spectator to do just that.

The artists came together through the internet to encourage and promote the art form in today's society and strive to keep it alive in the twenty-first century. A combined aesthetic used by the group is, "to encourage dialog and demonstrate that articulate abstract expression still thrives and remains vibrant into the new millennium".

With artists such as Tomma Abts, last years Turner Prize winner, creating a new forum for abstract expressionism, abstract art is now making its mark in the twenty-first century.

This award winning group have chosen Slough Trading Estate's warehouse setting as the UK forum for their large scale abstract works. The spectator becomes surrounded and influenced by each painting as it is presented before them.

Pintura Fresca want us to see abstract expression as an art form that is very much alive. Whether they are successful in this or not, is up to you.
